Mission, Vision, & Core Values
Our University
Founded in 1848, the University of Mississippi, affectionately known to alumni, students, and friends as Ole Miss, is Mississippi’s flagship university. Included in the elite group of R-1: Doctoral Universities – Highest Research Activity by the Carnegie Classification, our university has a long history of producing leaders in public service, academics and business. With more than 24,000 students, Ole Miss is the state’s largest university and is ranked among the nation’s fastest-growing institutions. Our 15 academic divisions include a major medical school, nationally recognized schools of accountancy, law and pharmacy, and the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, renowned for a blend of academic rigor, experiential learning, and opportunities for community action.
Our City
Located in the rolling hills of Lafayette County, Mississippi, Oxford is home to nearly 24,000 year-round residents and just as many students. The picturesque downtown square is filled with award-winning restaurants, live music venues, galleries, boutiques, and souvenir shops. The influence of the city’s rich literary, art, and music history is everywhere, so it’s easy to see why residents and visitors alike refer to Oxford as the “Cultural Mecca of the South.” Together members of the Lafayette-Oxford-University community host the annual Double Decker Arts Festival, the Southern Foodways Alliance, the Oxford Conference for the Book, and the Oxford Film Festival.
School spirit runs deep among Oxonians as they join students and visitors in cheering on the Ole Miss Rebels athletic teams each season. The city’s numerous parks, walking trails, and city-sponsored outdoor workout facilities provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beauty of the North Mississippi landscape. For Oxonians looking for a change of scenery, Sardis Lake, located 25 miles from Oxford, is a great destination for swimming and boating, and Memphis, Tennessee, located approximately an hour from Oxford, is home to numerous dining, shopping, and entertainment options as well as an international airport.
